RUO Certification Level I
The foundation of responsible independent research.
You do not need a PhD to begin learning how to conduct responsible research. You do need to understand the fundamentals, the risks, and the rules.

- People with little or no formal research background who want to begin conducting independent research responsibly.
- Curriculum
- 8 modules, 40 lessons, about 7 hours of reading
- Version control
- RUO Certification Level I, version 1.0, effective August 2026. The version in force on your completion date is recorded on your credential and kept permanently.
- Renewal
- Level I is valid for three years. Holders are notified when regulatory guidance changes materially and updated education becomes available.

Module 1
What RUO Means and What Independent Research IsThe basic vocabulary of this whole field: what the letters RUO actually say, and what it means to do research on your own without a lab or an institution behind you.
Module 2
The Basic Scientific MethodA simple, repeatable way of thinking that separates careful research from guesswork: ask a question, form an expectation, test it fairly, and pay attention to what actually happens.
Module 3
Basic Safety, Storage, and Contamination AwarenessPractical, non-technical habits for handling and storing research materials responsibly, and for noticing when something might be contaminated or degraded.
Module 4
Measurement FundamentalsThe basic tools of measurement that every careful researcher needs: units, concentration, and understanding that every measurement carries some amount of error.
Module 5
Documentation and RecordkeepingWhy writing things down consistently is one of the most powerful research habits there is, and what a good, honest research record actually looks like.
Module 6
Certificates of Analysis and Basic Testing ConceptsWhat a certificate of analysis actually is, what it can and cannot prove, and a beginner-friendly look at how materials get tested in the first place.
Module 7
Research Versus TreatmentA clear line between doing research and treating a health condition, why personal experimentation sits in its own category, and the basic ideas behind protecting people in research.
Module 8
Basic Legal, Regulatory, and Certification ConceptsA gentle first look at where the FDA's authority comes in, why marketing and labeling matter legally, when a situation needs real legal analysis, and exactly what this certification does and does not give you.
Scope of this credential
RUO Foundation certification demonstrates completion of an independent education and research-literacy standard.
This certification does not establish
- Medical licensure
- FDA authorization
- Authorization to prescribe
- Authorization to dispense
- Authorization for human administration
- Authorization for an otherwise regulated clinical investigation
- Government approval
- A determination that a specific activity is legal
- Immunity from regulatory enforcement

Before certification you acknowledge each statement below. Your acknowledgements are stored with the certification record, along with the curriculum version in force.

- I understand that research use only material is not approved for administration to people or animals, and that certification does not authorize such use.
- I understand that this certification program is not wholly inclusive or exhaustive, that it cannot cover every material, method, hazard, or legal requirement, and that I remain responsible for conducting additional research and taking additional precautions appropriate to my own work.
